The expression "Roulette" is French and in essence it means "small wheel". While it might seem that since "Roulette" is a French word that the online game itself comes from France, but this is not essentially accurate. There are a number of different hypotheses varying from the game originating in China, as well as ancient Rome. Ultimately, in 1842, the French brothers Louis and Francois Blanc created the roulette game we know right now. They invented the Single Zero edition used by most countries in the world. A legend about Francois Blanc, is that he apparently sold his soul to Satan so as to obtain the secret of roulette. Conspiracy-nuts confirm this story by the fact that all the numbers on a roulette wheel added up to "666".
Even though the Blanc brothers’ game was a resounding success, betting was still against the law in France so it was presented in Hamburg instead. Gambling was eventually prohibited in Germany too, even so, but then The Prince of Monaco asked Louis to operate his Monte Carlo casino and reacquaint the folks with the game of roulette.
When brought over to America, the "0" edition of roulette was abandoned in favour of the "00" edition of roulette. These days, to be able to differentiate between these two variants, the "00" edition is called the American Wheel whilst the Single Zero version the European Wheel.
